Simple Steps for Safely Cleaning a Gas Stove
Gas stoves provide lots of advantages. In addition to being considered trendy by hipsters, they’re both cost–effective and durable. Because they allow for a quick change in heat, gas stoves are precise for chefs and novice cooks alike.
Like most things in our homes, it’s helpful to maintain your gas stove by cleaning it regularly. Spending even five to ten minutes after each use will help prevent buildup and grime. However, even the best-maintained appliances sometimes need a deep clean; here’s what to do when your gas stove needs a reset.
- Clean the grates and burner caps. Begin by filling your sink with warm water and several drops of dish soap. Remove the grates and burner caps and let them soak in the water. After soaking for several minutes to allow food particles to soften, use a scrubbing sponge to remove the remainder of the stuck–on grunge. Rinse completely and allow the items to air dry.
- If you’re dealing with a seriously sticky situation, and the normal routine just isn’t cutting it, try the following. Apply a paste made of baking soda and water to the grates. Allow it to stand for at least 20 minutes. Once you’ve given it time to break down burnt parts, continue to scrub until the buildup is gone. Rinse thoroughly and air dry.
- Remove stains and spills from the stovetop. First, use a paper towel or dry cloth to remove any loose food bits from the area. Mix dish soap and warm water, and dip a scrub brush in the solution. Clean the stovetop, and make sure to wring your sponge regularly in order to stop water from getting into the fuel ports. “Rinse” the space by wiping with a semi-damp microfiber cloth.
- Clear out fuel ports. Sometimes, burnt food can create some blockages. Check out your fuel ports; then, using a clean toothbrush, pipe cleaner, or paper clip, remove any leftover fragments.
- Use caution. Before cleaning, double–check to make sure the stove has been turned off and that everything has completely cooled. Be vigilant in preventing the electric starters from getting wet during the cleaning process.
